Mountain Huts
The
high country is spotted with interesting huts built by stockmen, pastoralists,
prospectors, recreational fishermen, skiers and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric
Authority to meet their needs at the time. Prior to the area being designated
a reserve in 1944 and proclaimed a National Park in 1967, the high country
was open to extensive pastoral and mining activities. After the occupants
were driven from their dwellings, the Snowy Hydro-Electric Scheme also
built huts and shelters.
Many of the original
huts have been lost through fire and decay. The National Parks and Wildlife
Service destroyed the village of Kiandra in 1974, which in it's heyday
boasted 15 hotels and 30 stores. The remaining huts are now cared for
co-operatively by the Kosciusko
Huts Association and the Park Services.
Namadgi National
Park was first explored in 1820 and opened to pastoralism in th 1830's.
Several families where actively engaged in pastoral activities for many
generations, even through the declaration of the Australian Capital Territory
and change to leasehold land in 1901. During 1979, many farmers that had
farmed the land since the 1830's were driven out with the declaration
of the Gudgenby Nature Reserve, followed by the Namadgi National Park
in 1984 and extensions in 1991.
The
huts in the high country not only serve an historical relevance, they
also are critical for survival situations for back country travellers
and people stranded due to deteriorating weather conditions.
